Asphalt Additives

TeraGrip Anti Stripping Agents

Additives, which are also known as DOP, increase stripping resistance and create a stronger bond between bitumen and aggregate. Use of TeraGrip extends the life of the asphalt road with a minor additional cost as compared with the total cost of asphalt materials. İstanbul Teknik has always been an innovative and creative company in terms of asphalt chemicals. We care about human health & environment and therefore, we develop innovative products to create safer, cost effective and more robust bitumen road coatings.

Fields of Application and Use

To understand the anti-stripping effect of TeraGrip with bitumen and aggregate, it is necessary to define the adhesion and cohesion forces.
Adhesion:
It refers to the attractive force that allows for different types of molecules to adhere to each other.
Cohesion:
It refers to the attractive force between the same types of molecules. Cohesion force is the force that holds matter molecules together. The best example for cohesion force is that liquid drop stands in a global structure without being dispersed. Adhesion and cohesion forces are intermolecular forces. Adhesion and cohesion forces are effective in the wetting of objects.
Bitumen is hydrophobic and aggregate is hydrophilic. The polarity of bitumen is low, while the polarity of water is very high as compared with bitumen. So, the ability of water to wet the aggregate surface is much higher than the ability of bitumen.
Bitumen is a material with low polarity, difficult to adhere to many aggregate surfaces and has high viscosity.
Bitumen viscosity must be reduced to ensure adequate wetting. TeraGrip adds polarity to hydrophobic, bitumen hydrocarbon chain and converts it to a hydrophilic structure. It also reduces bitumen viscosity and surface tension. In this way, it enables bitumen to cover aggregate surface better thanks to its adhesion effect.
Experiments conducted with various aggregates such as limestone, basalt, granite, stream aggregate, etc. demonstrate that TeraGrip increases stripping strength and adhesion force and also increases the indirect tensile strength (ITS) by reducing the water sensitivity of asphalt mixture
The solid or liquid form of TeraGrip does not have any effect on the amount of use. The dosage is determined based on the activity degree of the additive used. TeraGrip is produced in different concentrations and activity levels according to needs.

Advantages

The reason for major degenerations on the surface such as reveling, detachment, holes and cracks etc. is the peeling of bitumen from the surface of aggregate and insufficient levels of peeling resistance and adhesion. The adhesion between the aggregate and bitumen is affected by the physical, chemical and mineral properties of aggregate in the asphalt concrete and the chemical properties of bitumen. TeraGrip reduces the surface tension of bitumen and strengthens it to adhere to aggregate.
It prevents bitumen from peeling off from the aggregate, and extends the life of the asphalt coating. It increases the adhesion between bitumen and aggregate and improves indirect tensile strength (ITS) of asphalt. TeraGrip ensures excellent results with limestone and miscellaneous aggregates such as basalt and granite that have high silica ratios.
TeraGrip is not water-soluble.
Application
Anti-Stripping additives are generally used in bituminous hot mixtures (BHM) and surface treatment applications. Anti-Stripping additive can be mixed with bitumen in service tanks. It can be mixed by using simple mixers as well as circulation pumps.
It is mixed in the bitumen tank in the ratio of 0.1% to %0.4. It should be used according to the dosage determined as a result of stripping (Nicholson) and adhesion (Vialit) tests. For example, 2 kg TeraGrip should be added to 1 ton bitumen for 0.20% dosage.
TeraGrip in liquid form can be manually poured into a bitumen tank. However, we recommend the use of a dosing pump in terms of occupational health and safety.
They may exist in liquid or solid form in different activity groups.
TeraGrip can be used within hot bitumen for a long time without impairing its stability.
