NovaPrene SK Polymer Bitumen Additive

Türkiye’de KGM, belediyeler ve il özel idarelerinin bünyesindeki asfalt yolların yaklaşık üçte ikisinden
fazlası sathi kaplamadır.
In Turkey, more than two-thirds of the asphalt roads in the area of responsibility of the General Directorate of Highways, municipalities and special provincial administrations are surface treatments. Surface treatment is commonly preferred because it is a fast and cost-effective solution on the roads where traffic density is lower. It is also known that the average life of surface treatment roads in our country is very short. There are many factors that determine the useful life of surface treatment roads.

Fields of Application and Use

It is a block copolymer synthetic rubber that is made up of styrene-butadiene bonds. It is an easy-to mix, low-viscosity, polymer modified bitumen additive that gives homogeneous mixture and that has been developed for surface treatment applications made with hot bitumen.
It is a styrene-butadiene (SB) based polymer modified bitumen additive with high molecular weight. When its polystyrene is added into bitumen, it gives hardness and polybutadiene gives flexibility.
It has two components. First, Liquid NovaPrene P is added to bitumen. The bonds of asphaltene aggregates are broken and dispersed in the maltene phase. (See page 7). Then, NovaPrene SK is added to bitumen and the modification process is completed. It is used at 2.5- 3,0% ratio for bitumen. It is added to bitumen at 180 ºC and mixed for 2-3 hours in a mechanical mixer until polymer disappears completely. It is completely dissolved in bitumen.
NovaPrene-P breaks the large asphaltene structure through the points where the bonds are weak, reduces the asphaltene molecular weight, disperses them in the maltene phase and helps with the formation of a continuous phase.
In this way, the NovaPrene-S polymer can also affect the areas where it could not reach before, making it easier to form a continuous phase in maltene. The amount of polymer required is reduced.
As a result of the change in the particle structure and morphology of bitumen, the effect of the maltene phase in the bitumen increases. This creates a more suitable environment for the formation of the continuous polymer phase. It is sufficient to add NovaPrene-P at 0.3 - 0.5% by weight to hot bitumen and mix it for 30 minutes.
In this way, the first step of a mechanism that can ensure the formation of a continuous phase by using less amount of NovaPrene-S to bitumen is started.

Advantages

By increasing the softening point of bitumen, it prevents bitumen on the surface treatment roads from swelling at high temperatures.
Prevents cracks by improving the thermal resistance of bitumen.
Due to its elastic structure, it increases resistance against tensile and contraction forces caused by day and night temperature differences.
Prevents loss of gravels as a result of increased strength.
Extends the life of roads and driving safety is increased.
High storage stability.
As it is in the form of fine powder, there is no need for a polymer modified plant (mill).
Bitumen with a lower viscosity is obtained as a result of using a lower amount of polymer. Viscosity of bitumen is important in surface treatment to ensure that bitumen can wrap the gravel.
The aging (oxidation) characteristics of bitumen are improved.
Application
The surface treatment made by using bitumen modified with NovaPrene SK is not different than the standard surface treatment application made by using Standard bitumen. The application consists of spraying hot bitumen on a plant mix base (PMB) or on an old hot mixture asphalt road surface and spreading and compacting the gravel of a certain particle size on it.
It is crucial that a strong and sticky bond is created between the binder bitumen and gravel. The gravel used must be washed, dry and not dusty. In the surface treatment made by using the NovaPrene SK method, the bitumen is prevented from swelling on the road at high temperatures. In cold climatic conditions, the adhesion of gravel to the road increases due to the flexible structure. Thanks to the strong bond created between bitumen and gravel, the life of the surface treatment is extended.
Hot Surface Treatment with NovaPrene SK Modified Bitumen
In the hot-sprayed surface treatment application made by using the NovaPrene SK; the bitumen that is modified by mixing it with NovaPrene SK in advance is applied by using the same spreading and compaction equipment as those used with the standard bitumen. Keeping the sprayed NovaPrene SK modified bitumen temperature at 180-190 ºC will ensure fluidity in a way that does not disrupt spraying. The amount of typical application is 1 liter per sqm.
By applying the standard procedure, the bitumen that is modified by using NovaPrene SK is sprayed on the surface in an integrated manner, and then gravel is spread without allowing for the bitumen to cool. Compaction is then made by using a rubber-wheeled roller. There is no objection to open the road to traffic immediately. Even opening the road to traffic earlier is an application that yields good results
Packaging
It should be kept in its sealed packaging protected from moisture. Do not expose it to sunlight.
