Asphalt Additives
Polymer Modified Bitumen Additive- SBS is a Styrene - Butadiene - Styrene (SBS) polymer additive that is most commonly used in mixtures. It is used as a modifying additive to improve the behavior of bituminous binders and mixtures.
Styrene Butadiene Block Copolymer (SB-BK) is an elastomeric, high molecular weight, synthetic rubbers with hard polystyrene blocks at its ends where these polymers are bonded to each other through flexible polybutadiene bridges. The most commonly used polymer in the asphalt sector is SBS.
When polystyrene is heated above the glass transition temperature of 90 ºC, the molecule softens and becomes fluid. In this way, it becomes easier to mix with bitumen. When it is cooled below 90 ºC, polybutadiene blocks lock the polystyrene blocks, and a physical cross-bonding occurs.
This bonding is very rigid due to its polystyrene structure, but it is also flexible due to its polybutadiene bridges. This physical locking that occurs as a result of cooling restores to its original form above 90 ºC, and the workability is achieved.
AIncreased traffic load and number of vehicles cause asphalt road pavements to deteriorate faster. Today, such deteriorations are prevented by using the Globalprene SBS in asphalt road superstructure coatings. By modifying bitumen and bituminous hot mixtures (BHM), it is aimed to give more resistance against negative situations such as:
Wheel tracking settlement of road pavements
Aggregate stripping
Corrugations
Low temperature cracks.
Application
In order for bitumen and SBS to be mixed homogeneously, a high shear mill that mills and mixes SBS with bitumen is necessary.
It is difficult to mix bitumen and SBS in fully-homogeneous way without using a mill. Polymer Modified Bitumen (PmB) is produced by mixing SBS with bitumen at 180 C in a special modified bitumen mill facility.
In highway applications, SBS can be mixed with bitumen between 4% and 5% (as percentage by weight of bitumen).
